May 15th, BODEGA returns to LA

May 15th, BODEGA starts up again @ Señor Fish in Little Tokyo. Guests include DJ Nu-Mark, Moni (Friends We Love, NYC) and B+ (Mochilla). Residents Cee Brown, Melaaza, and Panamami will be holding it down as usual w/ their tasty blend of latin/world infused goodness. The party is free, there's no bullshit hype line, and people come with one purpose: to move hips sexily. Past guests include Jeremy Sole, Quantic, Sabo, Los Rakas, Oro11, and more. Taylor McFerrin + Nikko Gray 3/3/11 @ Little Temple

It's been a minute LA, but this last Thursday @ Little Temple made me realize I need to get back on the blog wagon. I had the pleasure of seeing both Nikko Gray and Taylor McFerrin (as well as some surprise guests) perform for Nu-Thursdays (put on by Nu-Soul: www.nu-soulmag.com). I have seen bits of Nikko's performances in the past as she is a staple in the love-friendly nightlife of LA. She once again laced the mic with sugar like the sultry songstress she is. Always in diva-mode, she kept that healing feminine energy flowing. From downright dreamy tunes to hip-shakers, she knows how to flex in many forms. She also had guest MC, Chris Young join her to throw in some rap flavor for a couple joints. Nikko Gray = Voice + Looks + Vibe = WIN.

Next up on the bill: Taylor McFerrin

After a little intermission with DJ Destroyer on the decks, Taylor McFerrin took the stage with a Rhodes, midi controllers, and his mouth. Deceptively humble in his vibe, he proceeded to build straight, uncut DOPENESS from scratch via live looping of keys, samples, and beatboxing (dude needs to jam w/ Rahzel if he hasn't already). To say the least, the McFerrin seed contains some sort of inter-galactic magic (his pops is Bobby McFerrin if you hadn't figured it out yet). Taylor brought Nikko Gray back on stage, as well as Chris Young and they proceeded to improvise their way through a song that honestly sounded better than a lot of pre-rehearsed bits I've heard from other artists. He then brought up fellow Brainfeeder signee, Austin Peralta. An odyssey is about the closest approximation for a word that can describe the musical journey they took my ears on. McFerrin is a deft beatboxer who understands rhythm to the core, and Peralta, well, he's legit as fuck on keys, truth. They had a free-form chemistry that only true musicians possess and carried on a musical conversation that probably only half of the audience fully understood (unless they have a grasp of music theory). Be on the lookout for more from Taylor McFerrin. He's got an honest, unpretentious, and highly-skilled nature that will continue to serve him as he gives the world more of his musical goodness.

Soul Slam: Prince Vs. MJ w/ DJ Spinna

Hot damn the Echoplex was bumpin' in Los Angeles this last Friday. Soul Slam 6 took over and brought out the one and only DJ Spinna and Monalisa from Garth Trinidad Sound. The world-renowned DJ/Producer from Brooklyn had a 4 hour mega set going through the respective catalogues of Prince and Michael Jackson; he even dropped hip hop tracks that sampled both of these legendary artists (he's a hip hop dj, how could he not?).

I had a smile on my face the entire time I was there. Everyone in the building had a smile on their face for that matter, except for dudes too busy texting and getting their lurk on in the dance area. I'm proud of LA for showing mad love to Spinna, who naturally returned it like a good DJ should. I always enjoy it when a true DJ spins a set, especially when they can add extra life to tracks that are so well known.The highlight from my night was when Spinna simply rocked doubles of "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough". Every time the song was about to start, he'd loop it back up, making the audience let out an audible 'OOOHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!' He finally dropped the track and, naturally, people lost their shit. Another highlight of the night was one of the hype-men who sounded like Fatman Scoop (was that him? I don't know what he looks like). This night was fresh; I'm definitely ready for the next Soul Slam. Check out the artwork / promo for the San Francisco Soul Slam 2010 the following night at The Mezzanine.

On May 19th, LA got a funky couple of treats courtesy of Nu-Soul Magazine and Soul Union. Their event, Strictly Social (on tour in California), brought the talents of Erik Rico, Sy Smith, and Mark de Clive-Lowe to Little Temple. Let me start by saying that I had a GREAT time. I've been on Nu-Soul's email list for a minute now but haven't been able to make it out to many of their events, which is kind of crappy considering some of their past guests (Shafiq Husayn from Sa-Ra, Afta-1, Jimetta Rose). I figured Mark de Clive-Lowe was an opportunity I shouldn't pass up as the man GETS DOWN on keys and drum machines. For those who don't know Mr. Clive-Lowe, click here to watch his video on the Red Mull Music Academy. Anyways, when I get to the spot, the residents Myxzlplix & Destroyer were holdin it down w/ some head-bumpin' joints. First on was Erik Rico, who I was unfamiliar with until that point. He went on a journey (a lesson if you will) of sorts looking back on funk and soul classics through the lens of future groove. Not only was he singing his heart out, he was on the vocoder/keys, and even a guitar. I love it when performers just pick up a guitar like 'That's right, I'm about to get down,' and then proceed to do just that.

After Erik Rico, it was time for the main event. Sy Smith & Mark de Clive-Lowe make an outstanding musical pair. You couldn't help but feel good when they took the stage and started to bring their uptempo, jazzy, soulful, extra-funky future goodness. I wish I had been more familiar w/ Sy Smith before because that woman has some pipes, AND she looked extra fit up on stage. The pair shared exclusive tracks from their new project and I'll definitely be needing to cop the album if it drops on wax. My highlight of the night had to be their version of 'Messages from the Stars' by The Rah Band (peep the original if you don't know: click here). I love that track and was totally vibin' out when they got into it. After the set, Mark de Clive-Lowe continued to spin on the decks w/ his special blend of dance treats. For the life of me, I can't figure out why people started leave; it wasn't even last call, and the music was HOT. LA, you disappoint me a little. This man is from out of the country and you don't have the good sense to get your two-step on while he continues to drop science???? In any event, this night was great and I'm glad I got out to it. If you're in SF, go there too, you might find some artists that will be coming through the Bay.

Seconds away from the end of the beginning is surreal. This year, some of us got hit hard while others were tremendously fortunate. X means ten and so the new dance is crossing forearms. Sister cities, new friends, solid chumps and moving on.

GoldSweat the 'blogspot' may function sporadically, as something we haven't decided yet, but most of the content we will publish will be in our new apartment downtown. I kinda like the gentlemen/dunce look of this website, so some of us may live vicariously through its 'we absolutely don't give a fuck' persona. Plus, its white. BellyUp dead lifts without a backbrace and I play video games standing up with my mouth closed.

My first experience with a "Hopie" was in the middle Geneva Street at 3am near John Mclaren Park. I'll never forget the first thing "Hopie" said when she saw me: "DOESN'T SKUNK SMELL LIKE DANK ASS WEED?!?" Nuff said.

BULiMiATRON is our GoldSweat LA first cousin that basically has been a staple in the LA rave scene for a big minute now. He was our featured guest DJ for GoldSweat August with DJ Enki from the Oakland Faders and MelissFX, his Synth City label mate and microphone siren. Recently, he's had his first three singles drop on Beatport, with a few more in the works as you read! He's also just recently been singed to CRUX label, which basically solidifies him as a major rager (but we already knew that). We're such big fans of his here in SF, we brought him back for our Temple SF Destiny Lounge showcase with The What What, Pance Party, and myself (Loco).

Mike the 2600 King of Burlesque North America hyped us up on this event so we're following suit. This weekend is the Festival of Rock Posters hosted by The Rock Poster Society. Mike the 2600 was our featured DJ along with B.Cause (who will be playing at Face Down Ass Up this Thursday), TophOne, and White Girl Lust at GoldSweat's 1 Year Anniversary @ Madrone Art Bar back on August 29th. Besides being one of our favorite DJs and one hell of a graphic designer, the 2600 King runs Burlesque North America. They've produced the exclusive art work for Unruly Records, Bonobo Music Festival, and of course GoldSweat's 1 Year Anni. If you're still in the bay after the last two RAGING weekends, listen to what Burlesque has to say:

Part two of our BASS-HEAVY mega post comes from Party Like Us / Trouble and Bass lable-mate, Udachi. Hailing from Staten Island, NY (home of the Shaolin Wu-Tang tiger style) and having JUST released the Paypur EP, GoldSweat made it a point to bring him out the Bay for some Infatuation action. Headlining with our own Sticky K and Breakdown (Josh David, LA), his mix brings the bass like nobody's bizness. But before we get into it, here's a little ditty on his latest release on the Nightshifters label:

A beast of a release, Paypur features two incredible original tracks by the duo and five stunning remixes. AC Slater states “This could easily be the biggest release of 2009. Ive been playing this in every one of my DJ sets for the past 6 months.” Garnering support from the likes of Tommie Sunshine, Fake Blood, DJ Craze, and Klever, and BBC Radio 1 Airplay on Kissy Sellouts show, it has breakthrough potential!

Paypur begins on a mellow old school tip with an 808 bounce that builds into an oscillating frenzy of a drop. The track follows an imaginary clubber on his first night out, he thinks he has the swag, but the push and pull of the track shows the subtle comedy of someone succumbing to too much “fun”, then regresses from the perfect bliss of mixed substances before hurling it up with a psychedelic whine of chest thumping bass.

Smoke Rings includes Jubilee on vocals crooning over a dub-reggae breakdown about aliens stealing her weed. The best slices in like a rip in the space-time continuum sending Jess on a chase to get the weed back. If you want to know how the story ends, the crooner gets her weed back and parties with the aliens back on Planet Rad! A happy ending indeed…

GoldSweat will probably go into labor tonight, with Baltimore basically destroying everyone's Saturday night on the East Coast with a lineup stacked higher than IHOP in Angles Camp. BUL!M!ATRON & MelissFX continue to reak havok at every spot of their Synth City tour. Crunk joins them for the second time this month as GoldSweat.LA made a stop down in the dirty a few weeks back. Kosta is making his GoldSweat debeut but hardly a rookie. In fact, GoldSweat roots just got deeper than mangroves. Unruly, Top Billen, GoldSweat, BombtheBlock, Pixelbombs, PedxBmore, and the Red Square is gonna be the spot tonight no joke, hands down. Speaking of west coast, two GoldSweaters will be comfortably warn twice tonight in San Francisco as well.

First, Loco'll be competing in the last round of the prelim's for Energy 92.7's Ultimate DJ Competition. The Cafe (located at the corner of Castro & Market, above Chevron / Subway) will host the event from 8pm - 10pm, with their normal radio invasion following. Its free for the competition and it'll be a whopping good time, no?

Second, Pance Party is making their Lights Down Low debut over at Triple Crown with resident Sleazemore, Miss Toats from San Diego's Discodust blog, and Acid Girls from LA's iHeartComixs label.

Someone get me started on last nights Felix Cartal and Bird Peterson show... that shit was WICKED!!!

Mike the 2600 King (Burlesque North America / Do It To It)

Starting off as a college radio DJ in St. Louis, Mike learned his way around a pair of turntables and began building his record collection, spinning at parties on campus and around the city. In 1999, he released "Yars' Revenge," a 4-track mixtape of funk breaks, scratch routines, and Black Sabbath and Sesame Street samples.

In the years to follow, Mike linked up with Doug Surreal, Bitch Ass Darius, and other St. Louis DJs to form the Litterthugz crew, with whom he spun at clubs, parties, and DJ battles around the Midwest, was twice nominated as St. Louis' best hip hop DJ, and released the T.A.B.L.A.M.F.C.B. 12", a barrage of cut-and-paste jeep beats, as well as a slew of acclaimed mix CDs including the funk and psychedelic workout "Heavy Session."

In 2008, Mike 2600 incorporated Burlesque North America into the musical equation. With original and individually pressed 12" LPs, the Do It To It Series was born. Volume 1 went straight to the point with timeless and true club essentials. Varied in genre and tempo, each track is perfect for any DJ makin' a statement while singing along.

Not only are we big huge giant fans like Egyptian palace slaves of Felix Cartal, but Bird Peterson is a personal favorite that we're straight tape on the front of our glasses excited about. Bird had an exclusive mix included with the Do It To It EP Vol.2, which is directly related to our Mike the 2600 King party at Madrone Art Bar next Saturday, August 29th (see below). I'm sure the speaker cones at this MASSIVE will be vibrating like 17th & Mission. Anyway, Dances With White Girls was recently featured on Turntable Lab's most recent podcast and his beats are pure hot fire! Ruby Skyy didn't really know what they got into when they booked this lineup because walls will melt and the burn ward at Kaiser is gonna be crowded. ALSO tomorrow night, Grime City comes with the major wood with DZ! When Loco first met Belly, we were outside Grime City (over a year ago!!) and he couldn't talk more about how much he loved this party. We're back on that knew new and I think we clean up well.

Back when GoldSweat was a whole lot of nothing except Belly and Loco jockin' their own steez, we were doing crazy concepts and challenging the normal flier format. We started focusing on visually separating ourselves from typical club propaganda just to be scene, even though we knew nobody was gonna know wtf we were or what we sounded like. This in-exposure made it more and more comfortable to just be dumb with our ideas and see what happened. Many of our longtime supporters actually got at us because of the images instead of through our music. Now you can find all that here and here and here.

Loud Loud Loud is probably the only real way to describe August.

In the 8th month's first week, GoldSweat was steppin' hard with Sticky K playing three times this week (Sacramento Wednesday and San Francisco Friday and Saturday), GoldSweat.LA family BUL!M!ATRON and Meliss FX kickin' off their Synth City Tour for our Master monthly, and featured members of Pance Party, Super Best Friends Club, Oakland Faders, and Yahtzee all making apperances in support. Big fat one's to Hacksaw Entertainment and RichDDT for hosting Jack Beats and Sticky K at Paradise Lounge. It was a pretty INCREDIBLE show, with the whole venue packed tight like IV Garb raves in the desert.

Sticky K - "Since I started DJing back in school, the set I played at Paradise Lounge was probably my best yet."

The next night was his Master Monthly @ the Triple Crown. Belly Up, the man behind the 2D pastel porn mayhem that is the GoldSweat image, loosed it up early with a sleeper filled midtempo banger set that netted a few happy hour folks into some couples grinding not seen since high school. What makes his set stand out is deffinetly the live interludes mirroring those Quickies on our website (btw, we got mad hits to the site and ever more on the first series of mixes posted here!) Next, Oakland Fader and Lower Hater, DJ Enki, followed in suit like a lawyer winning cases. Transfering between genre's, tempos, doubles, line, and phono solidified my personal goal to become the president of his fan club. Disco burners buttered up the bread for some true-electro veggies and then my favorite meal of the night, that boogie down baltimore club. Light enough to be full but gawd damn, you're coming back again and ordering the same thing. Sunday afternoon I ran into Enki at Lower Haters, exchanged props and spoke a bit about the night. When I mentioned a tracklist he responded:

DJ Enki - "Aww man (laughs)! You know I gotta keep SOME secrets!"

B-Boy rule #1, don't bite. Speaking of fangs, BUL!M!ATRON and Meliss FX graced the bass with jams too good for jelly. This month I was workin' the door, raising my hands, and singin' my ass off. BUL!M!ATRON has a new remix out, his calender just got east coasted with the beginning of his tour with Meliss FX, and Sunday night he's co-headling with Felix Cartel in LA (he'll also be back at the end of August for a rave at Kelly's Mission Rock and our Gold Standard throw down at Temple, stay tuned!). You can tell they're LA only in the fact that its really not a joke. Myspace your Monday morning with a little entertainment research and you'll find that these two are gonna boogie down some breaks at Bomb the Block in Baltimore (HUGE LINEUP!) and GoldSweat Atlanta with our man Captain Crunk! They got a line drive ahead of them... the length of the state straight to a gig, kinda still hungover, and running late cause Upper Playground is off the hook right now (seriously). I asked Meliss FX about their tour schedule, with SF being the first date and the first of the east coast spots starting Friday night...

Meliss FX - "Well, we're driving down to LA straight to a gig - hopefully we're not late (laughs cause she's the one draggin...). Then we got another gig Monday, Wednesday and we jump on a plane for New York Thursday. I'm really excited!"

2nd installment from GoldSweat July 11th Recorded Mixes. After my opening set, Big Sounds and The Colonal MC took it up to 11 from the very first song. A little back story about the mix; Big Sounds had to use about 10 pieces of scotch tape to keep his Akai APC40 power sourced. I'm not sure if he picked it up from UPS on his way down to the club or what, but Big Sounds got to the booth with the whole thing still inside the box! Regardless of the precursor, this mix requires your bass bins to be tested.

The month of July has been absolutely wild.

If you haven't already, peep the website... its coming along nicely! We've posted a few new mixes, added a few more graphics, and completely utilize the contact page. As it is the last day of the month, August finds GoldSweat in full stride with round 2 at Triple Crown with one of our most favorite locals, DJ Enki. Oakland Faders representing from the bay and our first cousin in LA, BULiMiATRON, starts his Synth City tour with us. Boogie down breaks combined with monster scene bass lends itself well to that Sticky K, eh? DJ Enki is the newest member for the world famous Oakland Faders and boogie down champion. I'm listening to this Disco mix as I'm typing and it reminds me again why summer be da bes! I know for us here in the bay, warm whether only lasts a few hours during the day, with most public parks packed so tight a gofer couldn't find a place to chill.

That being said, you absolutely will not want to miss GoldSweat on August 8th! Not only is this one of the MOST eclectic lineups the city has ever seen for a "dance" event, its also going to be one of the most memorable. The man has been DJing for almost 15 years. He’s shared the stage with the likes of Z-Trip, J-Rocc, Melo-D, Kid Koala, Rob Swift, Shortkut, Apollo, Jazzy Jay, Peanut Butter Wolf, Lyrics Born, Brother J (X-Clan), Zeph, Romanowski, Doc Fu and a host of others. He was the main resident for the infamous Money$hot weekly in San Francisco for two and a half years, during which it got named one of the top 5 Hip-Hop weeklies in the country by URB Magazine. How’s that for starters?

Born and raised on the East Coast, Enki grew up listening to DJ Red Alert’s show. Like most DJ’s who started their obsession with the turntables in the late '80s to mid 90s, the local hip-hop show was church, hence the religious practice of sitting down and listening intently as soon as the clock struck. He attended college in North Carolina, where he connected with long time friends and music cohorts Faust & Shortee, with whom he now shares membership with as part of the renowned Citizenz collective.

But it's not just about playing shows, it's about what's in your musical arsenal, too. These days, the digging is more serious than ever, putting Enki in the big leagues when it comes to the elusive un-used breakbeat, especially with him being all about the sampling when it comes to producing -- a take on the art form that is slowly heading toward nonexistence in the synth-heavy rap music world. Guess you just have to dig a little deeper. No problem. Enki's debut cut, "Kung Fu Kwaku," went pretty deep. And there's more where that came from.

Enki moved to Northern California, the Bay Area to be exact, 10 years ago. He’s lasted more than 2. That makes him official. The fact that he’s the newest member of the Oakland Faders doesn’t hurt either. Catch him rockin’ the party these days like a true master, making you nod to that joint that you had no idea was about to be your favorite. It’s likely to be self-produced.

Hot damn we had a good weekend.

First of all, HUGE thanks to everyone that come to GoldSweat last Saturday at the Triple Crown. Dubsided artist, Sticky K made his San Francisco debut and kicked off an exciting future as Master Resident for our monthly party. What made this event uniquely special was the fact that many of the raging lunatics that showed up were coming from accross the state. As far south as LA, as far east as Sacramento valley, and everywhere in between. Back all that up with the entire supporting lineup coming from uniquely different but equally as dominant musical backgrounds, that's what we call one hell of a party. Mad love to The What What featuring Colonal MC (Compression D&B, SF) and Big Sounds (Hardcore Porn / Yahtzee Crew, SF), Eric Sharp from the mighty Rock It Science, and of course Sticky K. His Kissy Sell Out Radio One BBC Mix airs soon and the kid's been busier than a festival vendor.

Next month we've invited DJ Enki from the Oakland Faders / The Citizens, East Bay CA. Enki just dropped his new Break It Down mix CD and this shit is crackin. You kids have no fucking idea. What the fuck is The What What!?!?!?!?! Honestly, GoldSweat doesn't even know...

On the real, Big Sounds (Hardcore Porn / Yahtzee Crew) and the Colonel MC (Compression / Lower Haters) got together with some dream team ideas. The Colonel MC is known through his association with the world famous Compression Drum & Bass crew. This year, Compression hosted, alongside Pioneer and Heavy Hitter Dj SS from Formation Records,The World of Drum & Bass 10 Year Anniversary at Temple SF. I was out of town, but the crater they left under the freeway on Howard Street here in SF didn't get fixed until almost a month later (just kidding, but not really)! The Colonel MC and 2Cents (Compression Crew) put together a mix for SS that is so fucking wicked and you shouldn't really leave your CD out cause peeps be taking that shit! Not exclusive to 175bpms, The Colonel fucks with Drum and Bass, Dubstep, and that new wobble-wobble electro/wtf ever it is shit thats massive right now. Unfortunately Drum & Bass has taken a back seat to house/electro in San Francisco, at least as far as popular music played out in the city. However, GoldSweat has always had a "wifey love" for bassline, so when dubstep and that wobble wobble took off these past 2 years, we knew our ear should be to the streets... Were also waiting for Compression to start with the devestating tremors again. Compression events are Bass Ridden Nights of Madness! Little did we know these guys probly are going to be the reason San Francisco falls into the bay when the big one hits!

Here's where Big Sounds enters: this kid is One half of The Beets, Hardcore Porn and Yahtzee Crew, GoldSweat first hooked up with Big Sounds for the Special Sunday w/B.Rich (Palms Out Sounds) last month. Peep the videos from Love Fest this year and you can see both the Colonel MC and Big Sounds riding the bass like a bike.

This afternoon he sent us a mix full of wobble wobble, bass bass, disco sirens, 3rd world drum beats, and GoldSweat is proud to share with the world. You deffinetly won't want to miss The What What! The first time I met Eric Sharp was New Years Eve 2008 @ Temple Nightclub. For those that didn't know, NYE that year featured DIPLO (Mad Decent - worldwide), NICK CATCHDUBS (Fools Gold-NYC), MOTION POTION (Fringe/Mutaytor-SF), RICHIE PANIC (Frisco Disco/Robot Rock-SF), PHARRELL (Fluokids-Paris), MISS TOATS and RICHRD OH?! (Big Stereo-SF), PAUL HEMMING (Temple-SF), DURBEN (Temple-SF), and JASWHO? (Temple-SF). Needless to say, it was a pretty epic night, especially it being my first NYE in SF. Sticky K is name to be known. But to know is to already be familiar and I can guarantee that many have no idea. I had the pleasure of meeting Sticky K face to face in his element. Isla Vista is infamous for being an experience in an of itself. Thousands of kids attending UCSB live predominently in this segregated area near the airport 20 minutes away from State Street. Imagine your entire school, ages 18 -25, live within 3 square miles of each other and basically do whatever the hell they want. I graduated 2 years ago 90 minutes north at CPSU, where kids would come back from weekends in IV covered in bandages, STILL wasted, missing their roommate, and often short about a hundred brain cells. The culture that Sticky K mutated from is one where drugs induce inspiration where chaos is dealt with daily. Kegstands and mushroom trips balance along side ritual surf sessions and hot summers. The party culture in IV outshines anything any of clubs in Santa Barbara where djs like Steve Aeoki, Donald Glaude, Christopher Lawrence, and DJAM have all been featured. IV Garb, a creature standing on its own 4 feet, basically created a foundation for Rodney Kashani aka Sticky K, to develop. One might think that they're a bit behind in image with their neon tank tops and paint pen typography, but trends don't matter when you're that close to LA, surf between classes, and listen to electro before bed... right? Man... I LOVE college...

Basically all of California showed up at Matador for the Freedom fight. Snoop Dogg ain't shit on this bitch. A few pimps showed up to pre-party and we got the pinkie-ring pound after some "White Lines" shit. All in all it was better than anything we'd hoped for. LA showed up as we were about to pull the plug with 1 working turntable and too many records. I guess it paid off to do all those lazy wedding gigs in internal mode.

Thats Greg posted up outside Mezzanine in front of Snoops Bently. I dunno if they ever got to see S-n-double-pizzle, but the traffic backed up onto to Market looked like a Dubs convention. But on the real, I'm all talk. Wish I didn't miss this...
